Those of us who have desk jobs can find Mondays especially difficult after having weekends of “freedom:” sleeping in, catching up on writing, spending time with loved ones. Monday to many signifies a return to conformity and politics, and thus require a special form of discipline – for when met with the wrong attitude, we just might stray into bitterness and resentment. With practice, we can greet Mondays with an attitude of healing, love, and light.

So, I offer a special practice just for Mondays: Metta Mondays!

Metta is a practice of offering loving-kindness to others, including oneself.

Through metta one refuses to be offensive and renounces bitterness, resentment and animosity of every kind, developing instead a mind of friendliness, accommodativeness and benevolence which seeks the well-being and happiness of others. True metta is devoid of self-interest. It evokes within a warm-hearted feeling of fellowship, sympathy and love, which grows boundless with practice and overcomes all social, religious, racial, political and economic barriers. Metta is indeed a universal, unselfish and all-embracing love. (Acharya Buddharakkhita)

The words of the Buddha offer these truths:

Hatred never ceases by hatred
but by love alone is healed.
This is the ancient and eternal law.

Like a caring mother
holding and guarding the life
of her only child,
so with boundless heart
hold yourself and all beings.

May I and all beings
be filled with lovingkindness.
May I and all beings
be safe from inner and outer dangers.
May I and all beings
be well in body and mind.
May I and all beings
be happy and free.
